Q. What if we have an existing regional classification that we like better?

Undoubtedly, there are regional classifications that are preferred over Ecological Systems for local applications. However, given the requirements of the national LANDFIRE Project, we must use a nationally available classification that will cover all land ownerships. LANDFIRE provides cross-walk information between LANDFIRE vegetation map units and existing map unit classifications whenever possible.
