The LANDFIRE (LF) fuels vegetation products describe the elements of fuels vegetation for each LF vegetation production unit. Fuel Vegetation Cover (FVC) represents a modified version of Existing Vegetation Cover (EVC). LF Remap EVC is mapped as continuous estimates of canopy cover for tree, shrub, and herbaceous lifeforms with a potential range from 0-100 percent. To translate continuous EVC values into fuel model assignments, EVC values were binned to correspond with the bins for previous LF versions.
FVC was developed using the full suite of LF vegetation releases and the most recent ten years of disturbance data. FVC more accurately leverages fuel transition assignments related to disturbed areas to properly align with logic developed from Fuels Calibration Workshops.
A significant refinement to the LF Remap process for FVC and other fuel products was adopted to more accurately represent vegetation within disturbed areas for fuels use, allowing LF Remap to provide "capable fuels" products. What this means is LF Remap fuels products in disturbed areas have been revised to expected 2019 or 2020 vegetation conditions for disturbances that occurred between 2009-2016 or 2010-2016, respectively, making the fuels products 2019 or 2020 capable. This new process considers all the existing disturbances included in LF Remap and adjusts the TSD for these to the effective year (2019 or 2020 in this example).
These refinements improve performance of fire behavior modeling and reduce the need for local LF users to update the vegetation and fuel conditions to represent current conditions. LF Remap fuel products in areas mapped as disturbed within the past 10 years (disturbances since 2009) are delivered with this "capable fuels" functionality.
LF uses FVC in the development of the fuel products.
