Annual updates have long been a goal of the LANDFIRE (LF) program. LF 2022 will be the first update that incorporates disturbances from the growing season before its release.

For LF to release annual updates, a transition to fiscal year disturbance accounting was necessary. This was done so that there was enough time to produce LF layers by the next year, that adjust vegetation and fuels in disturbed areas. LF 2022 is the first version with this methodology and will release beginning in the summer of 2023. The next update, LF 2023, planning is underway and includes the second LF annual update. LF 2023 will account for disturbances in the 2023 fiscal year with a planned release beginning in Spring of 2024.
