Description: | from Abstract: Crown ratio is the proportion of total tree length supporting live foliage. Inventory programs of the US Forest Service generally define crown ratio in terms of compacted or uncompacted measurements. Measurement of compacted crown ratio (CCR) involves envisioning the transfer of lower branches of trees with asymmetric crowns to fill holes in the upper portion of the crown. Uncompacted crown ratio (UNCR) is measured without adjustment for holes in the crown and may be a more appropriate measurement when interest is on height to the first live branches in the crown. Equations were developed to convert CCR to UNCR for 35 tree species. |

Description: | Vegetation structure, including forest canopy height, is an important input variable to fire behavior modeling systems for simulating wildfire behavior. As such, forest canopy height is one of a nationwide suite of products generated by the LANDFIRE program. In the past, LANDFIRE has relied on a combination of field observations and Landsat imagery to develop existing vegetation structure products. |

Description: | The Landscape Fire and Resource Management Planning Tools (LANDFIRE) 2010 data release provides updated and enhanced vegetation, fuel, and fire regime layers consistently across the United States. The data represent landscape conditions from approximately 2010 and are the latest release in a series of planned updates to maintain currency of LANDFIRE data products. Enhancements to the data products included refinement of urban areas by incorporating the National Land Cover Database 2006 land cover product, refinement of agricultural lands by integrating the National Agriculture Statistics Service 2011 cropland data layer, and improved wetlands delineations using the National Land Cover Database 2006 land cover and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wetlands Inventory data. |

Description: | The LANDFIRE (LF) Program strives to produce cons istent and relevant fire behavior fuel model grids for the United States (U.S.). While these m odels are relevant for predicting fire behavior, including spread and intensity, during average conditions, they often fall short during drought or seasonably dry conditions. LF, in a continuing effort to improve the functionality and accuracy of the fuel products, has developed the Modeling Dynami c-Fuels with an Index System (MoD-FIS) for different geographic areas of the U.S. This repor t documents the development, methodology, testing and results, and conclusion of the fine fuels based MoD-FIS process in the Great Basin and Southwest (GB/SW) U.S. |
