The purpose of this agreement is to provide the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the LANDFIRE Program (LANDFIRE – USDI, USDA Forest Service and associated partners) the capability to share sensitive reports, documents, tables and, alphanumeric and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data.
GAP and LF rely on land cover attributes with similar scale and resolution. The programs coordinate their work to improve scientific consistency and production efficiency.
The purpose of this summary paper is to provide information about the current plan to remap the nationwide LANDFIRE products of vegetation and fuels data.

Description:
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) clearly state the roles and responsibilities between GAP Analysis Program and LANDFIRE Program, with the explicit purpose of defining a unified process that results in a unified product through the formal partnership of the GAP and LANDFIRE programs.

LANDFIRE (LF) completed the LF 2016 Remap effort in 2021, the biggest revision of its product suite since its inception. This document serves to describe the processes that went into this effort and elucidate the methods for creating each LF product. Although the document focuses on the LF 2016 Remap effort, it also details the two updates that have been completed since that effort, LF 2019 Limited (released June 2021) and LF 2020 (underway at the writing of this document).

Various methodologies have been employed and several data versions have been created over the past 10+ years. The basis for the entire suite of fuel attributes, both surface and canopy fuel depictions, began with the allocation of the surface fuel model.
